If a link takes you to the same website, then fine: Leave it in one window. If it takes you elsewhere, then open it somewhere else. I'm not saying that would work for the entire web, but it would make life here much easier. Tbh I don't care about saving the web via standardisation, I'd rather things worked with a bit of common sense.

If someone wants to write me a greasemonkey script that opens links in another window here, then I'll happily change my vote and use that instead.

Not letting websites control software on the user's computer is common sense. More and more websites are and will be, moving to this method of navigation: it's how the new BBC website works, for one.

Code: Select all

// ==UserScript==
// @name          PHPBB New Window
// @namespace     http://www.silloyd.com
// @description    Makes postlinks open in new window
// @include       */viewtopic.php*
// ==/UserScript==
//
allElements = document.getElementsByTagName('a');
for (var i = 0; i < allElements.length; i++) {
    e = allElements[i];
    if(e.className.match(/postlink/i)){
        e.target = '_blank';
    }
}

Save that as PHPBB-NewWindow.user.js and drag it into FF.

It should only change links within posts.

Drag it where into FF? :oops:

Just into the main window area, it'll then confirm you want to install it.

See, that's exactly what I tried...

*checks something*

Ah, it might help if I had GM installed on this copy of FF... BRB!

Glad it works, I didn't really test it first.

At a guess, when Firefox and Opera started doing it, so... 4 or 5 years ago? ;)

Other than that, when IE started doing it, so whenever that belt-sanded turd that was IE7 landed.

*shrug*

I don't see the point of this ?

Just click with the scroll to open in a new tab... or if your on a laptop (or have a shit mouse) just press ctrl when clicking the link...or i think it's ctrl and shift in opera.

I just find it easier for it to open in a new window with the left click.

Anyway, the mighty Tinlad's GM code worked just as well for me and Ekona.
