Godamned PCs

Postby Captain Sisko » Thu Aug 20, 2015 4:25 pm

Built a PC for a friend which was pretty good
a few days later he cals me to say PC has died - he was paying a game and the display died
When I examined it - the fans spun but no power through the USB ports and no display

Spec is Gigabyte GA970A DS3P, with an AMD Vishera Core FX8350 with that Be Quiet Pure Rock cooler, 16GB RAM and an EVGA nVidia GTX960 2GB, 120GB SSD

Motherboard replaced....
Fans spin, power through the USB ports but again no display no matter if i use his GFX card or a spare I had (no onboard gfx)
ideally I'd need to test the GFX card in another rig but I'm suspecting that when the PC motherboard died the first time it might have taken the CPU with it.
Is that likely that the CPU failed with the motherboard?

enough to drive someone to smoke, but i'll stick to drink!!

Not impossible I guess, I assume it doesn't even POST at all? Have you tried removing the RAM to a single stick, unplugging as many fans and drives and other things as possible too?

Also, I still haven't found a freakin' box yet

Is the PSU powerful enough to power it all, comfortably?

It's a 600w PSU

Everything was working before it all went pop

it's just frustrating!!

**edit** my friend got a new CPU and hey presto we have life again!!! time to get a big glass and a single malt!!!

If the CPU did fail with the motherboard then its probably the fault of the PSU. My brother once had a problem like this. Things kept dying in his machine. His PSU was the one area he cheaped out on (spent big on CPU and graphics card). I told him time and time again to replace the PSU but he would't. Eventually after 2 failed motherboards, a blown CPU, and 3 dead sticks of RAM he did what I said and his PC has been fine ever since.

99 times out of 100 if 2 components die in a PC at the same time, its the fault of the PSU. Replace that sucker.

Or buy a console and a tablet :D
A slight majority of a statistically worthless sample size agree.

Absolutely. Never go cheap on a PSU.

Agree.

And agree that you should recommend he upgrades his PSU.

It's been a day since he took it home......

Will see what happens. Hopefully it lasts longer than 3 days!!

Yeah I'd replace that PSU before it starts atom bombing the components inside the PC.

I like the Corsair CX750 or the Coolermaster G650M if you want semi-modular for a decent price.

Or go balls deep and get the Corsair RM750. All my built PC's have those in them. Glorious beasts.

Doesn't matter, cheap PSU are more costly in the long run due to blowing up other expensive equipment.

I'd go for one that DC recommend, I personally prefer a full modular ones as well as you can get it looking better. :)
