CMOS death or gpu failure?

Postby Dr Don » Thu May 25, 2017 7:45 pm

Hi, it's been quite some time since I was on these forums but was wondering if you could help me.

I have a gigbyte mobo which is 5 years old. When I got my geforce 970 the other year the pc wouldn't even boot with that card. After i switched back to my old card and updated the bios the 970 worked. Today I tried switching on my PC and it wouldn't boot. After removing the graphics card I heard it boot into windows. Since then I've sold my old gpu so I tried hooking up the hdmi from my onboard gpu but couldn't see anything on my tv, my momitor is displayport only so I couldn't hook thatup.

Could it be that the CMOS has died and the bios went back to the original settings? Or maybe my graphics card has died? I could get a cheap 2nd hand graphics card if I can't get my onboard working. One weird thing about my computer is that it's never made a bios beep, even for a successful boot.

If anyone can help or confirm my suspicions that'd be awesome. I tried reddit but no one replied

How old is the mobo?

As I stated it's 5 years old which after a quick google is about the time most cmos batteries fail.

PSU dying and not providing enough juice for the 970 as well as everything else?

So it wasn't the cmos battery. I can use the pc now with the internal graphics card but that's not gonna cut it for gaming. I could spend a tenner on a cheap gfx card to rule that out but since it could also be the pci express slot or capacitor on the mobo or the psu I think I'll accept defeat, take it to a shop and let them jiggle the components around.

Just thought I'd give an update. In the end I went to the IT mall in bangkok and had the gpu, psu and mobo checked. In the end it was the gpu. Surprisingly the shop didn't ask for any money but then it was a quick job. It's still in warranty so it's been sent off to gigabyte.

It's only been a week, it usually takes at least 2 apparently

So I thought I'd just update, I kinda forgot. I got the gpu back from gigabyte and it's been working well.
