Clarification on what you can/can't do here

Postby Dan » Sat Aug 25, 2007 11:32 pm

There's been some confusion as to what's allowed on here after the great server switch of June '07, so I thought I'd just clarify what can/can't go on (from a 'lets-not-shut-the-server-down' perspective at least - anything beyond that is up to everyone collectively).

Porn:
Obviously, nothing involving the under-18s. As far as I'm concerned, anything beyond that is fine, so long as it's clearly NSFW'd, isn't going to be accidentally stumbled upon, and is put in spoiler tags as an extra precaution. The same goes for PM's.

Copyright / Warez (including cracks, keygens etc):
You can't: Link directly to warez (i.e. pointing a link directly to an iso), or upload warez to the server (the file attachment option). If you want to do this, do it via MSN or whatever. Private messages are only private to a degree.
You can: Link to torrents (the torrent itself doesn't infringe copyright), or other means of possibly getting something which may be considered a little dodgy (for example a website which might have links to a certain file). If someone decides to then go through the necessary steps to acquire said content, that's their problem. Again, PM's are fine if you wish.

Or any stupid shite that is going to damage the computer of, or cause inconvenience to another user.

I know that all the people here are decent and sensible (and there haven't been any problems yet), but I didn't think a bit of clarification would hurt?

And lets face it, that's exactly what Google does, so any webhost would be cretinous to put that in terms and conditions anyway.

The actual server providers forbids: Hosting, Distributing, or Linking to Cracks, Hacks, Key Generators, Serials, or Pirated Software.. I think my interpretation of that is reasonable enough, given the argument you provided :)

Wow, that AUP is seriously restrictive compared to UK based hosts. I'm surprised they don't include an anti-blasphemy clause too.
A slight majority of a statistically worthless sample size agree.

To be honest, there's nothing in there I wouldn't want to have in my AUP if I were running a datacenter.

In the abuse forum, there was a topic with someone complaining about a website that was slagging off their religion, and the right for it to exist and be hosted on the server was strongly defended by the people running the datacenter. Of course, religious moron responded by then DDOSing the server

You click close, and instead of it exiting, you get a cascade of javascript popups.

Ah.

I get the principle, if not the lovely details of how Javascript works.

I am so glad I don't click on links in this forum until a bunch of other people say it's good.
