Raspberry Pi

Postby Dan » Tue Oct 02, 2012 7:40 pm

The purchases thread has been the home for this, but I thought a seperate thread would be nice.

I've got mine all set up now, and it's awesome.

Installed raspmc RC4 on it, and plugged in a 1TB external hard disk filled with TV and films. Have been happily media centring away ever since. Plays everything nicely, including some 720p stuff. Havn't tried anything at 1080p. I've also configured a Samba server (so I can mount the external drive as a windows file share on my housemates computers so they can add stuff) and made a few changes to the remote configuration (you can use a TV remote to control the Pi, but some buttons needed remapping).

All in all, pretty awesome. It works really really nicely. Definitely consider getting one for media-centre type stuff if you're cheap and have/are not adverse to learning some basic Linux skills.

Mine still isn't here.

If it doesn't do 1080p well, I'll probably end up binning it really.

I was going to get one but they're ugly and unavailable and for only twice the price I got this...

... which is nicer and delivered next day.

Looks good, but no Ethernet kills it for me.

It doesn't.

It'll plays 720p but as soon as you try to skip or fast forward it's fucked.

It's a good idea in theory for the media pc but really does require a bit more beef. Might get that dusie thingy but it's only got wireless so will likely struggle. I've tried streaming files over n and it buffers all the time.

It supports a USB to ethernet adaptor apparently but I use Wifi.

Don't know if it's just a signal issue, but my brother can't stream HD stuff over wifi. Ethernet all the way for me.

Bugger :(

Did you try a couple of media players on it in the end?

I've played the 1080p Hobbit trailer on mine without issue (streaming from my Mac via AirPlay).

I'm in the process of setting mine up in a similar way to Dan's - very impressed with Raspbmc so far.

I wasn't literally going to bin it ;) If it doesn't do what I want you're more than welcome to it at twice what I paid for it.
