Portable HDD for MAC and PC

Postby goAround » Sat Dec 08, 2012 11:49 am

Hi Guys,

Haven't posted for a while (although I've been lurking now and again) due to a very busy 6 months - getting married, new job and now 3 months pregnant! - Not me, the wife...

Anyway, on a similar subject, our videographer from the wedding has a load of footage that we would like, he needs us to send him a portable hard drive suitable for Mac with space for 150GB of footage. However, the problem is we only have a Windows running laptop. I understand there's a bit of difficulty with the file system's used between the two, FAT32 can't store more than individual file sizes of 4GB which most of the files will be bigger than, but the native Mac file system can't be read by Windows - is that right?

I've looked at this hdd which is only £60 for 1TB, what is the best way to set it up? Will it actually work over both systems?

Thanks for the help oh knowledgable ones!

Use NTFS and point the dude to NTFS-3G if he insists on using a Mac.

Cool, thanks RB, so basically that just allows the MAC to write to NTFS yeah?

Yep.
Or you can go the other way, let him format the drive with Mac HFS and then use HFS explorer on your PC

Brilliant, thanks, ordered. I'll find out which way he'd rather do it.

Use ExFAT - its already supported by Windows and Mac OSX.

My mountain lion Mac won't mount two of my drives when in exFAT format. Another one mounts fine but exFAT seems a bit Flaky under osx.

I don't have a Mac so have never had the privilege of trying - just knew that it was 'supposed' to be supported in the later OSX versions.
