graphics card suggestions (6850 v 7770 v 7850)

Postby Sam » Fri Feb 01, 2013 7:08 pm

So in the market for a new card, and heres my choices:

HD 6850, dual dvi 1GB, £84 ish delivered

7770 1GB + Far Cry 3, Sleeping dogs, £89 ish delviered

It's between those two at the minute, on one hand the 6850 is beefy, with an extra DVI port which is handy for my dual monitor setup as my monitors only have dvi/dsub. But, the 7770 has 2 games (tbh I'd only play them once through) and is newer technology, draws less power, produces less heat.

I cant decide between the 2, benchmarks are pretty identical, as they perform adequately for me but differ slightly back/forth between titles but seem to be good enough for me ( http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/539?vs=536 )

Someone help, and people with said cards would be nice. That Pixmania deal on the 6850 seems nice, considering theyre over £100 at least everywhere else.

edit: I will mainly only be using it for dual-monitoring, one 1920x1080, 1x 1680x1050. And possibly throwing my TV in the mix as well on especially busy soccer saturdays. So mostly watching tv shows/films on the bigger one, watching sports on the smaller one.

I don't really play any demanding games (source games, GTA4, maybe bf3 if I get round to getting back into it) but it would be nice to have some beef.

also, does anyone have a 7850, and what's it like? If my stuff sells on ebay for more than I want, I might push the boat out.

7770 I think out of those two.

Free stuff, looks better at handling high quality stuff on some games according to that link, and is newer tech.

Personally I wouldn't ever consider touching ATI stuff 'cos I remember all too well how shit their drivers used to be, but that's just random old bias.

My 4870 is still chugging along, probably had it 4 years, and all the Nvidias are overpriced compared to the same performance.

Might just go "fuck it" and drop the cash for the 7850, but I dont know if I really want to.

Ditto.

Intel + Nvidia ftw

Regarding your dilemma I personally would stretch to the 7850. It's a better card and it doesn't appear like you upgrade that often so should last that bit longer as well.

...and if i stretch for that one, I'll be able to game like mad all the time, and maybe get back into it.

I have a HD 5700 series card in this machine and I have to say it's solid and performs well. It's the first ATI card I've ever had.
I watched friends have problems/poor performance with ATI cards years ago and always went with nVidia because of it but I'm happy with this card so far.

I'd go for the most up to date card you can afford.

After my delivery driver murdered someone with his truck on her majestys highways, my product arrived about a week late.

the 7850 is awesome. Only game I've tried is Battlefield3, on a mix of high/ultra (high post-AA, 16x AF, No MSAA) on the most strenuous map Gulf of Oman 64player, with shit going down, it never goes below 40ish, and averages around the 60-70 mark when running about. Havent tried other maps/games yet.

some might consider that low for the card, but its sitting at about 65 - 75% activity, as my FX4100 is maxing out and bottlenecking me. Time for a 6/8 core bulldozer...
