Best £700 TV

Postby Dan » Sat Aug 02, 2014 4:57 pm

Want to buy a TV. Needs to be at least 42" I reckon, with max budget around £700.

Was thinking of the Samsung UE48H6400. Anything better for the price? Or anything equivalent available for less money? Not really that bothered about features beyond Freeview HD, and CEC support.

My first thoughts before I got as far as your second paragraph were to say Samsung. They're my go-to brand of choice for TV stuff, although they still cannot make a decent remote control.

My 55" 7000 series is now about 5 years old, and the quality is still up there with the newer models.

Having just bought a new TV, I did a lot of reading and I'd recommend the Samsung UE50H5500.
It's the 50" version of the one I bought. 40" was the max that would fit where it was going otherwise I would have had the 50.
It's a 2014 smart model with WiFi and Ethernet. It does catch up and plays pretty much any format from USB. Will read directly from DLNA servers as well as record to USB hard drives. It also supports screen mirroring of Androind devices (possibly apple too but I don't own any).

A slight majority of a statistically worthless sample size agree.

Looks good RB. Might go for the 48" though (living room isn't massive).

Looks to be on the sweet spot of having some smart features (e.g. catch up), without too much bullshit (e.g. voice control).

Well, went for the 48" H5500. Glad I didn't get the 50", as it wouldn't have fitted in my car. Got it from Richer Sounds -- called them, they had one, and I drove over and collected. Very simple, though the general manager of the shop was a massive bellend.

TV is great. Very bright, the smart interface isn't cripplingly slow, and the ability to 'send' youtube videos to the TV from your phone works much better than anticipated. Plays very nicely with the Raspberry Pi too.
