Looks like Sony will be the first to show their hand...

An announcement that it will be coming in 2014 once Sony's liquid assets consist of more than a half used Biro, three post-it notes, a slightly warm bag of chips and £38.27 in Vietnamese Dong.

I'll buy one obviously but I won't be camping outside Game this year I'd wager.

Brave move, I think most people expected MS to go first again.

Whilst I am interested in what the PS4 is/does, I'm still held back from a purchase by the controller (unless they do something different) and backwards compatibility. We've already seen what a hash of this Nintendo have made with regards to transferring downloads over, and whilst I expect Sony to be a little better at this with the PS4 I'll be absolutely gutted if MS don't get it bang-on. They need to be able to let you access your account, then transfer EVERYTHING straight over with no fuss. If I lose all my XBLA games and DLC for Rock Band, I'll be somewhat annoyed.

Whatever happens, I think we can expect some serious numbers here for the initial cost of these things. £350+ wouldn't surprise me, maybe more.

I paid £510 for my PS3 on release day. I expect the same again.

Lots of rumours Sony will drop the Dualshock, Dan. Nothing concrete yet, but I can't see them sticking with the same design again

Yup, I've seen those rumours too. They would have to produce something very, very special to tempt me away from the next Xbox though.

Sony have always charged a premium for there kit on first release.

Ill be getting it as well regardless of what it is but I've not actually played, well turned my ps3 on in I'd say over 2 years. Maybe even longer.

Pretty stupid that I'm going to get it but it is what it is I guess.

So since we know nothing at this point, I'm going to take some wild guesses.

PS4 will be called the PS4, no fancy names. The controller will basically be a Vita, touchscreen and all. Somehow they'll get two trigger buttons on it though. There won't be any buttons as we know them on the console itself, they'll all be capacitive touch ones. It'll have just the 2 USB ports, a brick for a PSU, and similar in size to the current PS3 Slim. Launch date will be March 2014, RRP of £499.

I think it will be called the PlayStation XX as next year is the 20th anniversary of the original PlayStation. It will be a grey top loader. The controller will be exactly the same as a dual shock but it will have a gyro for aiming. It will support 4k TVs. New games will be download only to kill the second hand market.

There will be a premium model with a massive hard drive, a year of PS Plus and two controllers for £500 and a pikey version with a tiny amount of flash storage and one controller for £350.

Maybe 4K, but only at 30fps. 60fps at 1080p will be standard on all games.

I'll not get one. I have the PS3 for a blu-ray player, xbox for a gaming platform that actually works well online.
The future of gaming is (rightly or wrongly) going to be social. Everything will be tied in with whatever rubbish is online, more premium DLC, multiplayer only content etc. The dashboard should and needs a massive overhaul if/when the PS4 pushes more social gaming, because unlike the xbox, the PS3 feels like it's on it's own and nobody else is out there: trophies and friends are hidden away and nothing is immediately on display.

I don't think I'll bother.

I used to use my 360/PS3 for controller games mainly, like racing games. Doesn't seem worth it to me any more.
