Wordpress is amazing! Plugins?

Postby DJ » Fri Oct 29, 2010 10:19 am

Can someone tell me how Wordpress works please? I'm trying it for the first time and I have to say that so far I think it's shit.
Now I want to make a little blog type thing of my radio musical escapades, sort of like a story of me getting famous from these humble beginnings, putting my shows online etc.

So I've a wordpress theme which I'm in the process of skinning the hell out of at http://www.djadam.co.uk
I've made two posts. Why aren't they in the blog? If you click my name you can see the two posts but that's a bit pointless; go to the blog page and it's empty. Can someone tell me which box I've not ticked please?

You've probably not put the posts under the category "blog", or you might've posted them as pages instead of posts.

I have 3 pages: Home, Blog, Contact.
I have 2 categories: Home, Blog (dunno if that's right or not)

If I go to edit my post, I have the box ticked in the categories panel for Blog. The Blog category is registering that there are 2 posts in it. I just can't see them until I click on my author name.
They are definitely posts and not pages.

Is the theme you are using totally custom? If you don't include the right PHP bits in it you end up with missing content. It may also be a case of the PHP part for the posts is set to only display certain categories.

I don't have access to my themes from work but I'll post the common bits of code I use when making a theme later.

Might be worth re-thinking the categories though. On mine I have categories such as Tech, Sport, Food, Gaming, etc as its easier to search post content using categories.

I think this is where I'm stumbling.
It's a theme I've downloaded, and so far not done much at all apart from follow the instructions for setting up the pages. It works out-of-the-box so I shouldn't need to do any coding of any kind, much like a regular theme. But I have the same problem with all themes I've tried.
I'll relook at the category names, it makes sense what you're saying there; I knew I'd not understood that right when I was doing them.

So I just need to get my new posts sitting in the Blog page. I take it the home page has stuff about me on it and has the latest blog post or something?
One of my posts is here:
http://www.djadam.co.uk/index.php/2010/ ... t-working/
I can view it from the admin panel.

I'm half tempted to delete everything and start again but I just know it's a simple thing, I just can't find it!

Actually the way you have yours Chris is how I want mine: Front page the blog posts, an about page, and a contact page.

Wordpress is a little less gay after poking around on your admin panel.

Sorted now, time to start making me a blog!
Thanks for the help everyone.

DJ, which theme did you use as a base before you started playing with it?

On djadam.co.uk is Bluebubble.
I've not had to do much to it but in it's current incarnation but it did need tweaks.
